Second Stage Housing
Gillian’s Place offers a transitional housing program in St. Catharines, in an effort to mitigate the housing crisis and assist those who may be placed on a waiting list for affordable housing. We have expanded our transitional housing program from four units in West Niagara to an additional nine units in St. Catharines.
Why Transitional Housing?
In Niagara, the housing crisis is critical and the waitlist for affordable housing is at an all-time high. Those who are trying to break the cycle of violence and abuse often face significant and complex barriers when attempting to secure accessible, affordable, and safe housing.
We know that having second-stage housing and supports in place makes it less likely for mothers to accept precarious, unstable, and unsafe housing options – including returning to their former abusive partner or finding a new one. Our expert counselors see this as a highly crucial and extremely impactful intervention in the cycle of violence that too many survivors find themselves in. With the leadership commitments from our community partners and generous gifts from donors, this past June, nine families are transitioned from emergency shelters and are moving forward to a life full of safety, stability, and self-sufficiency.
