We’re Working to Build a Safer Future.
A campaign for the future of Gillian’s Place.

With intimate partner violence declared an epidemic in Niagara, the urgency of our plan to build a safer future cannot be overstated.
In 2023, the Niagara Regional Police Domestic Violence Unit responded to 6,500 calls for service - an average of 18 incidents per day. Over 60 femicides occurred in Ontario last year. Sadly, three of these tragedies happened right here in Niagara.
Sadly, our work is not yet done. Today, demand for our services has never been higher.
While we have been doing everything within our current context to meet these needs, the size and layout of our facility posed significant challenges.
Due to capacity limitations, Gillian's Place must redirect more survivors than we can safely shelter. Many of our outreach programs, designed for clients who require support but not shelter, either did not exist or have been signficantly expanded since we moved to our currenty building in 2008. Unfortunately, our physical landscape did not allow us to provide the level of compassionate care to the over 2,000 clients who access these supports every year.
Gillian's Place desires to offer services and spaces where all survivors can come knowing they will be welcomed and provided with safety, dignity, and hope.

Urgent Needs Demand Bold Action
We have been planning a renovation to adapt our current spaces to mirror our support to our vulnerable clients. Given the realities of our present work and future demand forecast, the need has become abundantly more urgent. After careful examination and consultation, it is apparent that Gillian’s Place not only renovates our current space but also expands to better meet our community’s needs. This expansion will not only increase our shelter capacity but also improve our services, providing a safer and more supportive environment for survivors of gender-based violence.
Our vision involves two phases. Phase One will see us reimagine several areas of our facility currently used for legal and community outreach programs and administrative spaces. These areas will be converted to additional shelter resources – more bedrooms, bathrooms, counselling spaces, living areas, and a group and life skills programming room. Out of necessity, many of our current meeting spaces and smaller living areas have been converted to makeshift bedrooms. This certainly is not an ideal way for our vulnerable clients to reside, and this detrimentally affects other shelter services and experiences due to the lack of space. This renovation will allow Gillian’s Place to not only shelter more survivors with ten additional beds but also enable us to provide the compassionate, client-centred, trauma-informed, and harm-reductive care we aim to deliver.
The spaces renovated in Phase One are contingent on facility expansion. Phase Two of our vision will see a 8,000-square-foot addition that will be home to the…
Marotta Family Centre for Violence Prevention & Outreach Support.
Many of the spaces that were previously located in the existing building will move to the new Centre. The three-story, 8,000-square-foot addition will allow for expanded programming for outreach counselling, legal assistance, transitional and aftercare support, violence prevention work, and administration. Many of these programs and services either did not exist or have grown significantly since 2008, when Gillian’s Place moved into the former Victoria Public School.

This critically needed project comes in at the cost of $10 million dollars and includes:

5 new bedrooms

11 shelter beds

Security upgrades

Communal spaces

Staff wellness space

Pet shelter

Child & youth room enhancement

Group programming, life -skills & collaboration room

Gillian’s Place extends our heartfelt thanks to all our partners in hope who have not only given meaningful and thoughtful gifts to help build a safer future, but also support our life-changing programs on an annual basis.

Announcing a Special Gift…
Gillian’s Place will be home of Marotta Family Centre for Violence Prevention & Outreach Support.
Gillian’s Place is excited to share that longstanding donors, Angela Marotta, Melissa Marotta-Paolicelli, and their family have generously donated $1.5 million the Build a Safer Future Campaign. This gift will establish the Marotta Family Centre for Violence Prevention and Outreach Support in recognition of the Marotta’s generosity.
"We are truly thankful for the Marotta Family's longstanding faith in our work. We see the establishment of this new Centre as a critical catalyst for change in our community. We want to ensure that Niagara knows that we are more than just a safe shelter; we offer a wide range of programs for those facing abuse, and those who care about them. It has been inspiring to see our community embrace our vision for a safer future. Gifts large and small are a powerful testament to the belief in our life-changing and lifesaving mission", said Nicole Regehr, Executive Director.
